Many cooks today would like to choose healthier alternatives to typically western highly processed ingredients. However, not really understanding how to cook with new ingredients such as organic coconut flour may stop some people from trying something new.

The simple reality is Non-GMO organic coconut flour is very easy to bake and cook with and can allow you, with slight modifications and tweaking, to turn your favorite traditional recipes into gluten free options. This is because this is a gluten free coconut flour instead of the traditional white flour which does contain gluten.

Baking Considerations with Gluten Free Coconut Flour

Gluten is one protein found in many grains. It is a problem to digest for many people, some which may have significant medical condition, known as Celiac Disease, which causes digestive and other autoimmune health problems if gluten is consumed.

However, even those without gluten sensitivities or Celiac disease may choose to reduce their gluten intake. This doesn’t mean cutting out all baked goods, it just means substituting other things like gluten free coconut flour.

It is possible to cut traditional grain flours by about 1/3, substituting in Non-GMO organic coconut flour as the only change. The added protein and fiber in the organic coconut flour may create a slightly denser end product, but with only a 1/3 substitution this is rarely an issue.

Keep in mind the very nature of organic coconut flour is a dense product. This means you will often find when using it alone as a flour you need about one-third to one-half less than what is required for traditional grain flour. You may also have to slightly increase the amount of liquid used to bring the dough, batter or mixture to the desired consistency.

As a Thickener

Since organic coconut flour has a slight taste of coconut, it makes a terrific thickener for your morning or after workout smoothie. As mentioned above it is also high in protein and fiber, so it adds more than just a thicker, creamier texture.

It can be used in any type of batter or pancake recipe. With its natural sweetness, most people find the use of organic coconut flour means a decrease in the amount of sugar needed, another healthy side effect of using this wonderful product.

Once you try it, you find you buy organic coconut flour on a regular basis. It is wonderful flour to cook with and one which provides a unique taste.
