For many of us who attend church in Detroit, Lent began on February 14; this marked the beginning of a 40-day spiritual preparation for Good Friday and Easter. While Lent may be more joyless than Advent, our winter preparation for Jesus’ birth, Lent is also an important opportunity to remove focus from our own humanity and concentrate instead on the sacrifice made for us by the Lord. This time allows us an opportunity to reflect, to pray, and to find solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the Faith.
For many people, however, Lent also involves fasting—some individuals take this sentiment more literally than others. In many cases, the definition of fasting is used that means “to give something up.” In other words, one may give up a food they particularly enjoy or a habit that consumes their life and keeps them from God. These goals are easy to set, but not always so easy to maintain for a full 40 days.
Follow these tips to make the most of Lent, even when the going gets tough.
1. Take a well-deserved break on Sundays! Consider each Sabbath a day of celebration when you attend church in Detroit. Life Teen notes that one of the best ways to remember joy during a difficult Lent is to praise God, give thanks, and take a break from your fast on Sundays.
2. Get creative. Spiritual worship doesn’t have to take the same form every time. Busted Halo recommends meditating and praying through the act of coloring, for example. Music may be another way you choose to worship during this time.
3. Volunteer! Find an organization whose mission you are passionate about and dedicate some time during Lent to volunteering. It will be a fulfilling and meaningful distraction from your temptations.
4. Re-connect with your church family. If you have gone awhile without attending church in Detroit, use this time to get back in the habit of weekly worship.
