Renovating or updating the exterior of your home is a wonderful way to give an old house a new look. For many historic homes, the goal is not to change the look and the tone of the exterior, just to give an upgrade to the materials. To keep a traditional look to the front of a historic home, or even an older home, new styles of doors are certainly not a match. We can work with one of our existing doors and just adjust the style to meet your needs, or we can create a one-of-a-kind door based on the ideas you give us. We offer different levels of customization that make our inventory door designs and styles a perfect option for any older home. To help you in developing a look for your new but classic door style to match with an older home, let’s take a look at the options you need to consider. Specific Style Different style of older homes had specific styles or designs of doors. For example, the older Americana types of Prairie homes, Craftsman homes and American Foursquare styles look amazing with a Craftsman door. These doors can be customized to include the traditional dentil shelf, or perhaps to include the beautiful sidelites that were often found on these classic door styles. For the older country estate styles of homes, double doors were very traditional. You may want to consider upgrading to an arched or a round-top style that adds to the flowing line of the door and also makes an entrance look bigger. Glass Options in Lites With our inventory doors or our custom door design option, you have the ability to choose a glass that adds to the design and appeal of your door. For an elegant look consider a Chateau glass or a Builder’s glass, both of which are perfect in the larger lite styles of doors. For a more rustic look, you may want to choose a Flemish or a rain type of glass. This provides an older look to the glass while also increasing privacy without cutting down on natural light.
